If you’re obsessed with googling you and your crush’s zodiac sign compatibility, there’s actually a method to the madness. Synastry is a technique that allows you to determine whether you’re compatible with someone else by comparing your astrological placements with theirs. By now, you’ve probably mapped out how your sun sign pairs up with your special someone’s sun sign and determined whether you’re meant to be — but what if you have the same sun sign as someone’s moon sign? Could that actually help or hurt your potential matchup?

This question was posed by English journalist and comedian Amelia Dimoldenberg during her viral interview with Andrew Garfield at the 2023 Golden Globes; her sun sign, Aquarius, is the same as the actor’s moon sign. When she asked the Spider-Man actor what that means for their pairing, he claimed it’s a good thing — and he’s not wrong. Having the same sun as someone else’s moon is known for being one of the biggest indicators that the chemistry will be off the charts, regardless of any other astrological differences.

An example of this is the budding romance between Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce. Though the two come from very different worlds, the pop star and the football player’s astrological compatibility is a major indicator that there’s a strong attraction between them, due to their matching sun and moon signs. The singer of “The Archer” is a Sagittarius sun with a Cancer moon, while Travis is a Libra sun, Sagittarius moon. At first glance, this duo may not appear to be a good match when looking at the compatibility (or lack thereof) between their moon signs. However, since they both have one of their luminaries in the free-spirited sign of Sagittarius, this heightens their ability to relate and connect to each other on many different levels.

What Does It Mean To Have The Same Sun Sign As Someone’s Moon Sign?

In astrology, the sun and moon are the luminaries of the cosmos. The sun gives light, the moon receives it, and transmutes it down to Earth (which is what happens during a full moon). In a birth chart, the sun is the light, so it tends to bring attention to the sign and house its placed in. Having your sun in a sign like Sagittarius, for example, would bring your acknowledgement and awareness to topics like expanding your horizons, exploring the world around you, and maintaining a strong sense of hope and optimism. Sagittarius suns like the Grammy winner are known for being the voyagers of the zodiac, requiring plenty of space to try new things without feeling too limited or restricted.

The moon, however, has no light of its own, so the sign and house where the moon is placed in your birth chart is much less likely to get excess notoriety. Sagittarius moons like the Kansas City Chiefs tight end still share the same characteristics as Sagittarius suns, but they express them differently, conveying their emotional needs in a way that’s unbound, wide-ranging, and optimistic. When experiencing heavier feelings, they tend to make light of them, or even run away from them altogether, due to their desire to keep things fun and easygoing. The silver lining: Someone with a Sagittarius sun would easily be able to understand and relate to these qualities, rather than be offended by them.

TL;DR: Sharing the same sun and moon sign as a friend, family member, or romantic partner means that they see you in a way that others may not, especially if you’re the one with that moon sign. Your moon placement is the part of you that’s oftentimes hidden, unless you’re in a safe, comfortable environment — and those with their sun in that sign can often make you feel completely at ease. This kind of synastry oftentimes translates to feeling a strong sense of familiarity with that person, even if you haven’t known them very long. (Is that why Swift’s already met Mama Kelce? It’s totally possible). When the synastry is top-tier, things tend to get serious a lot quicker than usual.
