Lizzo Reveals Why She Waited Until Her 30s To Lose Her Virginity
"I wasn't even thinking about it."
Lizzo is getting very real about her love life, sharing an unexpected confession about her first time. The singer revealed that because of a promise she made herself years ago, she remained celibate for most of her life. But that finally changed a few years ago thanks to an important milestone in her career.
"I was a late bloomer. I lied about it for a long time," Lizzo shared during the March 31 episode of the Friends Keep Secrets podcast. The “About Damn Time” singer went on to reveal that she lost her virginity in 2020, when she was in her early 30s. "Isn't that crazy? I wasn't even thinking about it," Lizzo said.
Before that, the singer explained how she would obscure the truth about her sexual experience from friends. "I was in a friend group of girls. We were all girling one night and it was like, 'Wait, Lizzo are you a virgin?'" she recalled. "I remember it was so embarrassing. I said, 'I love the D.' I said that, and it held me over for a little while."
Lizzo had a personal reason for abstaining throughout her 20s — she first wanted to reach a specific career goal. “I promised myself when I was younger that I wouldn't have sex until I won a Grammy,” Lizzo said. Sure enough, right after she won her first three Grammys in early 2020, the superstar spiced things up in the bedroom. "It was not the night of Grammys," but soon after, Lizzo explained.
There’s was another element to her choice as well, having been raised in the Pentecostal church. “Y’all have no idea. It was religious for me too,” Lizzo said. “Like, when we were teenagers at my church, we all made a pact that we wouldn't do anything before marriage. And then, I was just so scared. Like, nobody wanted to kiss me.”
When she did have her first kiss at age 21, Lizzo described it as “terrible.” “It was a New Year's Eve thing and he forced it on me,” she said. “I was really mad and I was like, 'My first kiss is ruined.' I was so mad.”
Lizzo is currently in a relationship with comedian Myke Wright, whom she’s been dating since 2022.
