This Fact About Public Swimming Pools Will Scar You For Life

by Leigh Weingus

Summer is right around the corner, and if you're like me, you've been dreaming of long days reading and swimming in public pools.

OK, I live in New York City, so maybe I don't have many days like that ahead of me. But for the rest of you, I have some horrifying news: Swimming pools are actually really disgusting.

And no, I'm not just talking about the gross things chlorine does to your skin and hair, and I'm not even talking about your 5-year-old cousin who thinks the pool is his public bathroom.

According to a new review conducted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which inspected 48,632 swimming facilities (pools, jacuzzis, hot tubs and water parks), you're way better off swimming in the sea this summer.

A whopping 80 percent of these facilities had at least one health code violation.

The inspections found high levels of disinfectant, safety problems with pool equipment (putting you at a higher risk for drowning), harmful pH levels and unhealthy levels of chemical feeder.

How freaked out are you right now?

Until we get this one figured out, take heart: Spending your summer by the pool may not be the best idea anyway, as a new study found a lot of sunscreens don't even work.

What a cruel world, am I right?
