Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are engaged! Prince Charles made the announcement in an official statement from Clarence House (his official residence) on Monday, Nov. 27, saying the couple got engaged earlier this month after first getting together in 2016. So how did Meghan Markle and Prince Harry meet? According to Markle herself, it was the most normal thing on the planet. The pair apparently met through a mutual friend in July 2016, and the rest is history. The statement from Clarence House announcing the engagement said,

His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales is delighted to announce the engagement of Prince Harry to Ms. Meghan Markle. The wedding will take place in Spring 2018. Further details about the wedding day will be announced in due course. His Royal Highness and Ms. Markle became engaged in London earlier this month. Prince Harry has informed Her Majesty The Queen and other close members of his family. Prince Harry has also sought and received the blessing of Ms. Markle's parents. The couple will live in Nottingham Cottage at Kensington Palace.

Meghan Markle opened up about her relationship with Prince Harry (who is fifth in line for the British throne, in case you were wondering) in an interview with Vanity Fair in September. In the interview, she referred to Harry as her "boyfriend" and hinted that the story of how they got together is like a fairytale. And now, with a royal wedding coming this spring, that fairytale story is about to get a fairytale ending. Markle said,

We’re a couple. We’re in love. I’m sure there will be a time when we will have to come forward and present ourselves and have stories to tell, but I hope what people will understand is that this is our time. This is for us. It’s part of what makes it so special, that it’s just ours. But we’re happy. Personally, I love a great love story.

Markle was the victim of some serious tabloid and troll hate when her and Harry's relationship went public. It became so intense, Prince Harry released an official statement about Markle on Nov. 8, 2016 basically asking the tabloids to back off. She received a lot of racist and sexist backlash, but she told Vanity Fair that she purposefully doesn't read any news about her (or her show Suits) because she's fully grounded in her identity. She told the outlet, "I don’t read any press. I haven’t even read press for Suits. The people who are close to me anchor me in knowing who I am. The rest is noise.” She also said that while she loves Harry and is happy with their relationship, she's still her own person outside of it. She said,

We were very quietly dating for about six months before it became news, and I was working during that whole time, and the only thing that changed was people’s perception. Nothing about me changed. I’m still the same person that I am, and I’ve never defined myself by my relationship.

Prince Harry and Prince William's personal lives have always been a matter of public interest. It's unfortunately par for the course with any celebrity that their personal lives will be the victim of constant media scrutiny, and when it comes to the royal family, a lot of false stories are reported about their lives. Normally, Prince William and Prince Harry don't publicly react to the barrage of false stories printed about them. But Prince Harry's statement regarding media coverage about Meghan Markle showed just how much it was negatively affecting their lives. Part of the November 2016 statement read,

Since he was young, Prince Harry has been very aware of the warmth that has been extended to him by members of the public. He feels lucky to have so many people supporting him and knows what a fortunate and privileged life he leads... But the past week has seen a line crossed. His girlfriend, Meghan Markle, has been subject to a wave of abuse and harassment. Some of this has been very public - the smear on the front page of a national newspaper; the racial undertones of comment pieces; and the outright sexism and racism of social media trolls and web article comments... Prince Harry is worried about Ms. Markle’s safety and is deeply disappointed that he has not been able to protect her. It is not right that a few months into a relationship with him that Ms. Markle should be subjected to such a storm. He knows commentators will say this is ‘the price she has to pay’ and that ‘this is all part of the game’. He strongly disagrees. This is not a game - it is her life and his.

Yeah! Don't mess with my favorite celebrity couple, do you hear me?! PROTECT HARRY AND MEGHAN AT ALL COSTS.
