Dreaming About Being Pregnant Doesn't Necessarily Mean You're Itching To Have A Baby Right Now

So you look down at your belly, and somehow, out of nowhere, you're nine months pregnant and ready to pop. No, you haven't immaculately conceived. You're just asleep, and dreaming about being pregnant again. Sound familiar?

If so, you're definitely not the only one. Apparently, around 70 percent of women dream about being pregnant, so it's a pretty common theme to come up during your snooze time. I, for one, have definitely dreamed of being with child on more than one occasion, and it's not because I am pregnant, or even that I am itching to conceive in the near future. So what could such a dream possibly mean then?

The most common answer, it seems, amongst multiple sources, is that dreams of being pregnant are about your inner creativity and ideas or experiences waiting to emerge or develop.

The famous psychiatrist and psychoanalyst Carl Jung, who extensively studied the unconscious mind and dream life, believed that in the collective unconscious (structures of mind and thought shared among members of the same species), pregnancy was the ultimate symbol of growing life.

According to Dream Dictionary, these dreams symbolize new ideas or new life that have not yet entirely been brought to the level of consciousness.

Moreover, how far along you are in your dream pregnancy supposedly indicates how close you are to having those new ideas come to fruition. The dream, in a sense, indicates a need for self-reflection. If your dream tells you at what point the "baby" will be "born," that timeline can symbolize when those unconsciously held new ideas will become fully conscious and realized.

So, think about it: Is there something in your life right now that you might be holding back on? Something you want to try, but haven't? Something you are working on, or are in the midst of changing? A dream about pregnancy might be indicating these things are sounding out to be looked at and acted upon.

The online guide Dream Moods expands a bit upon this idea, explaining that pregnancy dreams symbolize aspects of yourself — including characteristics of your personality, or even skills you're learning — that are still developing.

Ally Mead, a psychic who studied dream analysis at the Jungian Institute of Los Angeles, told Huffington Post something quite similar, that the root of most pregnancy dreams are pretty much always about creativity — but creativity in a broad sense, not just artistic or productive.

A pregnant woman is literally creating and nurturing life in her body, so it makes sense that this is a potent dream symbol of creativity gestating, or waiting to be born.

Oftentimes, the dream may symbolize desires we possess, or things we want to do. Those things can even be as simple as a household project, finishing a craft, or as big as a change in career.

Mead explained to Huffington Post,

However, as psychologist Dr. John Mayer points out in a conversation with Elite Daily, you might want to approach any generalized meanings of dreams with a little bit of skepticism. "The meaning of dreams are so unique to each person," he says.

But an interesting fun fact? When women actually are pregnant, they tend to remember their dreams more frequently, and have more intense and vivid ones at that. This has to do with major shifts in hormones and a tendency to need more sleep in general.

But all in all, worry not, my friends. If you aren't ready to have a baby yet, your dream might just mean you're ready to bring a new idea to life. So listen to your unconscious mind and get to it!
