Caitlyn Jenner is paying special attention to the presidential election this year, the first since she publicly came out as transgender.
Jenner has long been conservative, and has supported the Republican party. But in a new interview with STAT, she speaks positively about the Democratic party, and especially their treatment of the LGBTQ+ community.
She was talking about health care for transgender people, and was then asked which party better understood the specific issues that affect the community. Jenner said,
I'm not excited with what Obama has done to the economy, to our Constitution, all that kind of stuff. But as far as the transgender community, they've actually been very good.
Jenner went on to say that although the Democrats are seen as better for the LGBTQ+ community, she personally believes Trump is better for women. She said,
But Trump seems to be very much for women. He seems very much behind the LGBT community because of what happened in North Carolina with the bathroom issue. He backed the LGBT community.
Jenner was talking about the North Carolina bathroom bill. Trump initially said people should use whichever bathroom they want, but later said states have the right to decide what to do regarding the issue.
Trump also publicly said that Jenner is free to use any bathroom in the Trump buildings any time she wants. Jenner took him up on that offer this spring, while criticizing former presidential candidate, Ted Cruz.
In the interview, Jenner said that although Trump was good on that issue, one can't be exactly certain of how he'll be on other issues. Jenner said,
But in Trump's case, there's a lot more unknowns. With Hillary, you pretty much know what you're gonna get with the LGBT community.
For her part, Clinton won the endorsement of the Human Rights Campaign, the biggest LGBTQ+ rights organization in America.
