When chaos erupted at what started as a peaceful protest rally in downtown Dallas, one woman did something incredible to save her four sons.

Shetamia Taylor, 37, made a human shield around her boys, aged 12 to 17, as bullets tore through the crowd.

Her sister Theresa Williams said she threw herself over the kids and consequently took a bullet in her right calf.

She had surgery this morning is currently recovering in hospital.

Twelve officers and two civilians were shot, according to Mayor Mike Rawlings. The death toll remains at five law enforcement officers. One suspect was killed by police.

President Barack Obama branded the tragedy “a vicious, calculated and despicable attack on law enforcement.” He added nothing can justify such acts of violence and that “justice will be done.”

Statistics from the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund show this to be the deadliest incident for US law enforcement since the 9/11 terror attacks. DART officer Brent Thompson, 43, is the first victim to be identified.

A Dallas Police Department spokesman said, “Our hearts are broken.”

Three suspects are in custody. Downtown Dallas was still declared an active crime scene as of Friday morning.
