Target Under Fire For Insensitivity

by Ally Batista

Target is never usually in the negative spotlight, but it seems as if their latest little slip up is causing a bit of backlash. The company is being called insensitive, but why?

Well, it turns out a Mossimo maxi dress, which is available in both regular and plus sizes, in identical color palates, was named differently. The regular sized dress was named ‘Dark Heather Gray’ and the plus sized version was named ‘Manatee Gray.’

The customer who found this difference, Susan Clemens, immediately tweeted her findings to Target. Target was quick to respond to their customer (or would be customer), by issuing a Twitter apology to her saying:

“We apologize for this unintentional oversight & never intend to offend our guests. We’ve heard you, and we’re working to fix it ASAP.”

A Target spokesperson has since explained the incident by saying that Target stocks several items, regardless of size, with the ‘Manatee Gray’ label, and that the mix-up was the result of miscommunication between buyers and not an insensitive comment.

“We apologize for any discomfort this might have caused and are working to update the name of the dress to reflect Dark Heather Gray. This was an unfortunate oversight and we’ll take it into consideration moving forward.”

Target has since removed the plus-sized version of the dress from Target.com.
