by Lauren Martin

Maya Angelou will be forever remembered as not just a poet, author and civil rights activist, but also as a guiding light for women.

Giving a voice to those who did not have one, she brought poetry and elegance to her protests and appeals. Her voice is one that will resonate long past her death and forever represent the strength of not just black women, but all women.

Born in St. Louis in 1928, the author grew up facing obstacles and hardships most of us will never be forced to know.

Despite these disadvantages, she managed to lead a life of grace and inspiration that many of us can only hope to emulate. At the age of 86, Maya Angelou departed this world and left great mourning from all of those who not only respected her, but saw her voice in their own.

So, in celebration of the wonderful life of one of America's greatest poets and authors, here's a tribute by OWN TV featuring Maya Angelou reading her most famous poem, "Phenomenal Woman," because that is exactly how she will be remembered.
