Lifestyle — 21-Year-Old Female Pilot Proves Women Can Strive In A Male-Dominated Industry

When most girls talk about what they want to be when they grow up, “pilot” is almost never mentioned. In fact, according to 2013 data from the FAA's Aeronautical Center, only about 6.6 percent of all pilots are women.

So when Vanessa Robles, a 21-year-old aspiring commercial pilot, decided she wanted to soar above the clouds, she knew she had her work cut out for her.

Her beloved grandmother, Vera Robles DeWitt, said,

She never shied away from a challenge.

Indeed, Vanessa excelled at the top of her class at her private flying school, even when her mostly-male peers doubted her competency.

She insists, though, they're not all like that. Most notably, her current flight instructor, Doug, continues to support her as she learns to fly.

Through professional as well as personal hardships, Vanessa's determination to succeed keeps her flying high.

For Vanessa, the sky's the limit.
