Parental Assistance vs. GPA

by Ally Batista

Many of us receive financial assistance from our parents while we’re in college. It’s not uncommon for your parents to pay for your college education and even assist with some of your spending money for the weekends.

This is great! Right? Well, maybe not. A new study conducted by the University of California Merced has found that parental assistance will in fact help students graduate from college, but that the financial aid also causes students to have lower GPAs.

The idea is that if you’re not paying for it yourself, it doesn’t seem like as serious of a deal to you. Do you agree with this study? I personally have had my education paid for by my parents, and my grades are just fine.
