Counterfeiting Laws Growing Stricter

by Ally Batista

New York City is one of the counterfeit capitals of the world. The problem has grown to be so out of control, that strict legal action is being enforced. Well, trying to be.

A bill, which was originally proposed in 2011, is getting a new push by New York councilwoman Margaret Chin. The bill in itself proposes jail time or a stiff fine for purchasing counterfeit goods.

If the bill passes, shoppers who are caught purchasing counterfeits can be charged with a misdemeanor punishable by up to $1,000 in fines or a year in prison. As of right now, it is illegal to manufacture and sell counterfeit handbags, watches, etc.

Do you think a law like this will ever pass?
