Bringing Back The 90s: Color Changing Nail Polish

by Ally Batista

We all remember the wonders of 90s jewelry. The most coveted piece in any young 90s girl’s jewelry box was always a mood ring. How cool was it that someone could actually determine what your mood was just by looking at your ring!

Of course, it wasn’t until we grew older that we realized that the color changing properties were actually fueled by a temperature change, and not our actual moods (dammit), but that doesn’t mean that the concept wasn’t still cool.

Now, the 90s color-changing trend is coming back, but this time in a nail polish form. The polish line is called Shade Shifter from the brand Orly.

Essentially, the product is a new color-changing gel topcoat that changes pigment depending on body temperature and chemistry. This topcoat transforms into an entirely new shade in the same color palette, darker if you’re cold, and lighter if you’re warm.

I’m sorry, I may be 21 years old, but this seems like the coolest nail concept to date. I can’t wait to get my hands on this polish to give it a try, but I’ll have to go to a professional because, for the time being, this color is being reserved for professional use only.

I’m sure it’s only a matter of time before the public demands that this becomes an everyday product.
