Sandra Oh Could Come Back To ‘Grey’s Anatomy,’ & Be Still Our Hearts
After Cristina Yang left Seattle Grace for new opportunities in Switzerland, many Grey's Anatomy fans were left devastated and desperate for the chance to see Cristina's cool demeanor once again. Well, fans, you may be in luck. Grey's Anatomy's Kevin McKidd, who played Cristina's love interest Owen, told Entertainment Tonight that there's a real possibility that Cristina Yang could return to Grey's Anatomy.
*squeeeeeeeeal*
The cool-headed surgeon, played by the incomparable Sandra Oh, as all good Grey's fans know, left Seattle for alpine pastures in Season 10 when her ex, Preston Burke, offered her a position at his hospital in Zurich, Switzerland. She accepted, betraying all of us and leaving everyone behind.
But that may not be the end of Cristina. McKidd told interviewers,
I hope she will. I think it would be so much fun. It would open up so much again in the story and mix everything up. Owen, wherever he is in his life, would have incredible stories. She’s just such an amazing actor. I still miss her to this day.
Oh apparently responded to McKidd's hopeful assertion, "Well, maybe, maybe" which is 100 percent Cristina Yang. You know our favorite chief of cardiothoracic surgery, always playing things close to the chest, but I bet Oh is 100 percent on board. She just doesn't want to spoil anything for Grey's fans, who all love her character.
Especially given that, according to McKidd, he and Oh speak all the time. And she has lots of ~opinions~ about post-Cristina Grey's.
"When my character got married to Amelia, [Oh] got kind of jealous and was like, ‘No, that’s not right!'," McKidd told Entertainment Tonight.
No offense to Amelia or anything, but Cristina Yang forever.
And, for that matter, while it would be fun to see what would happen between Cristina and Owen after the whole Amelia thing, I mostly just want to see Cristina and Meredith reunite.
After all, they are the most important relationship on the entire show. Full stop. I will not argue about this point, because it is not an opinion, it is the truth.
Cristina wouldn't be the only original character to return to the show after a devastating departure.
Katherine Heigl's character, Izzie Stevens, who was one of the original interns along with Meredith and Cristina, will reportedly return to Grey's for the 300th episode. While Heigl's character was famously put through the ringer and killed off due to her very public comments criticizing the show, Izzie was beloved, and so she'll return, sans Heigl. As, like, a ghost flashback. Played by a different actor. Shonda Rhimes is not to be f*cked with, apparently.
To be fair to Heigl, the 300th episode will also feature Cristina and George lookalikes, though Heigl's lookalike seems more... pointed.
And unlike Izzie and George, Cristina is still alive. She's one of the few original characters Rhimes hasn't killed off in 14 seasons of the show, so Cristina's return wouldn't require flashbacks or dream sequences or alternative timelines. Just a call from her best friend or ex-husband to please come visit.
And so many people are excited by the prospect.
Some people are trying to use social media to bully Rhimes into bringing back Cristina.
The people need Cristina — and McKidd planted the seed of revolution.
People will RETURN TO THE FANDOM, SHONDA. Return. to. the. fandom.
You don't just walk away from a show like Grey's, and you especially don't return for nothing, so Rhimes should really work her Shondamagic and get Oh back.
This one hurts, but... they're not wrong.
I'm willing to bet, though, that Cristina could make a guest appearance, and that would still do the trick for most people.
Think about it, Shonda. Seattle needs its best cardiothoracic surgeon.
