‘Riverdale’ Boss Just Confirmed When That ‘Sabrina’ Spinoff Will Premiere

CW

The question every Riverdale fan has been dying to get an answer to since The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina spinoff was announced last month is when we're actually going to be seeing the famous teenage witch on the CW. Thankfully, we got some answers at New York Comic Con this weekend. Elite Daily attended Saturday's panel on all things Archie Comics, and the CEO of the comic book franchise (who is also an executive producer on Riverdale) Jon Goldwater dropped some major bombshells on when Sabrina will make her TV debut in the Riverdale universe.

The biggest piece of information about the exciting new spinoff series is that it will definitely be premiering in 2018. Jon Goldwater mentioned that The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina is set to premiere next year on the CW, which is good news for fans since the initial announcement of the series a couple weeks ago did not come with any specifics on a release date. Most likely, the Sabrina spinoff will air in conjunction with the third season of Riverdale. Although Riverdale has yet to actually be renewed for a third season, fans can expect that when it does get picked up, that new season will probably have a premiere date sometime in October as well, mirroring the Season 2 premiere date. So for right now, our best guess for The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina is that is will also have an October 2018 premiere date.

But we might not have to wait that long to meet our new Sabrina — Jon Goldwater teased that Sabrina may ride her broomstick into Riverdale before helming her own series. When a fan asked the Archie Comics CEO if a crossover between the two shows was being discussed, he hinted, "It's possible; you'll have to wait and see." It seems more than just possible when you look at the team behind the shows: Archie Comics is known for its love of wild crossovers with surprising properties like Sonic the Hedgehog, the Punisher, and even Predator. Not to mention that showrunner Greg Berlanti's other CW franchise is the incredibly crossover-happy DC television universe, consisting of Arrow, The Flash, Supergirl, and DC's Legends of Tomorrow. Hey, maybe that means we could even see Archie and the gang meet up with Supergirl or the Flash at some point... but for right now the Sabrina crossover seems most likely.

Jon Goldwater also told the crowd that they are currently in the process of casting their Sabrina Spellman, and that we should expect that announcement very soon. Of course, Riverdale fans have already given us a frontrunner for the part. Former Disney Channel star Dove Cameron seems to be the name on everyone's lips when it comes to rumors about The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, and the actress herself is helping to fuel them with Instagram posts. After Riverdale fans began talking about Cameron as a possible Sabrina for the series, the actress posted a comic book panel of Sabrina Spellman along with the phone emoji. Was she saying she's still waiting to get the call to play Sabrina?

Well, whoever will be taking on the magical role should also be prepared for a very dark and horror-influenced take on the classic character. According to the CW, it will be completely different from the '90s sitcom starring Melissa Joan Hart, trading in the light humor of that adaptation for the supernatural and scary aspects of the recent comic book series The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina. And the good news is we will be able to see this dark, twisted new series soon enough, now that it's finally confirmed to premiere next year.
