Therapist Has Couples Assemble Ikea Furniture To Strengthen Their Bonds (Video)

by Emily Arata

On a memorable episode of "30 Rock," Liz Lemon swore she wouldn't let a trip to IKEA come between her and her boyfriend.

As the fight over which table to buy began, however, she exclaimed,

We are not letting this table be a metaphor for our relationship! That's what IKEA wants us to do!

Unfortunately for Lemon, it seems IKEA furniture might be more than metaphoric. California psychologist Ramani Durvasula relies on IKEA furniture building as a way to gauge couples' communication and trust.

She told ABC News the act of assembling the brand's complex pieces creates a "pressure cooker" environment in which tempers often explode.

Thinking about buying a house together? Try building a table first.
