Louis Virtel didn't win "Jeopardy!" but his snap might as well have.
The comedian's hilarious reaction to answering a question correctly has practically taken over the Internet.
On May 8, longtime fan Virtel finally got his chance to stand behind one of the game show's coveted podiums.
As the HitFix writer jokes in a first-person blog post, he "purred like Cruella and awaited the bloodshed" while preparing for the competition to begin.
Virtel explains, however, his one "Jeopardy!" regret was not announcing his sexual orientation on air.
Appearing on a program that doesn't traditionally cater to a gay audience was his chance to reach out to viewers across the nation who may not know gay people personally.
He noted how it's important for viewers to see gay people instead of just hearing about them, adding,
Heteronormativity is an intoxicating comfort for some, especially in remote, Internet-challenged areas... As a kid growing up in the suburbs who venerated everything about 'Jeopardy!', I would've loved seeing an expressive gay contestant own his homosexuality as well as the buzzer.
Virtel's viral fame began with the snap heard 'round the world.
It soon became a GIF.
Virtel certainly applied his trademark sense of humor on the episode.
I'm on @Jeopardy today. This is one of those days when I think about my childhood and wonder when "gifted" ended and "just gay" began. — Louis Virtel (@louisvirtel) May 8, 2015
