The Obama administration recently announced Harriet Tubman will replace President Andrew Jackson on the front of the $20 bill.
Jackson is to remain on the back of the bill, and the intrepid woman who escaped slavery and freed hundreds of slaves will be the first female in over a century and the first African American ever to be featured on the front of American currency.
Harriet Tubman is a monumental figure in American history. She helped lead over 300 slaves to freedom on the Underground Railroad and also helped the Union during the Civil War as a cook, nurse and spy. Navigating the Underground Railroad gave Tubman strong knowledge of the land, which proved extremely helpful during the war.
She was a fierce abolitionist, humanitarian and patriot. In short, Tubman was a true American hero, and she is definitely deserving of this honor.
But not everyone is happy about this change, with individuals like Donald Trump arguing this is just another example of "political correctness."
On Monday night, Samantha Bee offered a hilarious and spot-on analysis of why anyone against replacing Jackson with Tubman on the $20 bill has no idea what he or she is talking about.
As the "Full Frontal with Samantha Bee" host explained, Jackson was a terrible president whose decisions led to the deaths of thousands of Native Americans. She said,
Jackson... was a genocidal prick.
He signed the Indian Removal Act in 1830, forcing thousands of Cherokees to give up their lands east of the Mississippi River and march to Oklahoma on what is known as the Trail of Tears. Around 4,000 died along the way.
Moreover, Jackson's policies were detrimental to the US economy, and he was actually opposed to the idea of paper money altogether, preferring gold and silver (so he probably wouldn't even like having his face on a bill).
For all these reasons and more, it makes perfect sense to remove him from the $20 bill and replace him with someone else.
Tubman is the perfect choice because this country has frequently failed to properly honor the diverse array of characters from its past. In other words, we've had a lot of dead white dudes on our money (many of them slave owners, including Jackson), who do not present a full or equal picture of how this country was built.
