A suspect has been arrested after one police officer was killed and another injured in a shooting in San Diego.

Emergency services including SWAT teams and a police helicopter arrived on the scene in the southeastern part of the city at around 11 pm local time on Thursday.

They searched for the suspect and detained a person in connection with the shooting.

It is not yet known what sparked the violence.

The San Diego Police Department has paid tribute to the victim. A spokesperson posted on the San Diego Police Facebook page,

It is with a very sad heart that we announce the death of one of our officers tonight. Pray for his family and loved ones. We still have a second officer in surgery. Please keep him in your prayers.

It is not known how severe the second officer's injuries are, but Police Chief Shelley Zimmerman said he is expected to survive.

He was shot in the upper torso and taken to Scripps Mercy Hospital to undergo surgery.

The officers' names have not been released.

The incident is just the latest in a string of police shootings this year. Officers have already been killed in Dallas, Texas, and Baton Rouge, Louisiana this month alone.

This story is breaking and will be updated as more information becomes available.
