Real Life 'Barbie Girl' Drives Toy Jeep Around Campus After DWI Arrest

by Taylor Ortega

To some, a DWI is an opportunity for a hard-learned lesson. To others, it's an opportunity for fabtastical Twitter-fame explosion supreme.

When Tara Monroe was arrested on $3,000 bond in March and issued a DWI, life seemed pretty grim.

After all, the 20-year-old was just trying to enjoy a Waka Flocka concert the way nature intended: under the damn influence.

The Texas State University student was not interested in riding a bike to and from class after her father collected her car, so she turned to a little girl named Charlene.

Shortly after her misfortune, Tara was scrolling through the sometimes dark and dangerous cyber-forests of Craigslist when she came upon a used Barbie Jeep listed for $60.

The industrial engineering major purchased the fly ride and, upon picking it up from its previous owner, she was reportedly asked about her “little one.”

The student replied,

I am the little one.

Monroe and her battery-operated wheels since became a campus-wide sensation, picking up steam on Snapchat and Twitter.

Of the attention, Monroe told MySA,

Most people don't find the things me and my friends do very funny, just immature, so I didn't expect to get this big of a reaction. People who don't know me are shocked but my friends weren't even surprised because I do stuff like this all the time.

Her friends might not get to ride in the Jeep, aptly named Charlene, but they do get to bask in some of the glory.

Monroe explained,

It goes pretty fast when it's just me, so I usually make [my friends] walk behind me like parents taking their kid out to play. I'm just happy everyone thinks this is so hilarious.

The college junior will soon turn 21 and plans to spend her November birthday at The Square in San Marcos, Texas with her friends and, obviously, her ride.

Though some might tire of getting around at 5 mph, Monroe values her time with Charlene the Barbie Jeep. She said,

This is the best way I could have gotten my 15 minutes of fame. Basically, it was the best decision I've made in college.

Sometimes, the best friendships come from the unlikeliest situations.

Charlene and Monroe encourage others to live free.

Friends recognize her genius.

Sometimes, Monroe is even generous enough to let pals test out the luxurious plastic interior.

The truest love will forever be the kind between a girl and her Barbie Jeep.
