Stephen Colbert Goes In On Police Officers Using Nunchucks (Video)

by Stacey Leasca

Police in America are in a tough spot.

Many boys in blue are trying to figure out new ways to engage with their communities, shine a positive light on law enforcement, protect and serve the people, without ending up on the news for excessive force or racial profiling.

Some are doing it right.

Take, for example, the DC cop who broke up a crowd of teens with a dance fight (and totally won). Or the Louisiana officer who comforted a small child lost in a crowd until his mother was located.

And while the Anderson, California police force gets an A for effort, they get a big fail on execution.

The small-town police department thought it may be a good idea to outfit its force with one more non-lethal weapon: nunchucks.

Of the new weapon choice, Police Chief Michael Johnson told NBC,

In an era where the general public is extremely sensitive to police techniques and use of force issues, [nunchakus offer] another force option that may offset some of the more aggressive perceptions the public has about police intervention.

Let's face it: Police using nunchucks is downright hilarious.

Even Stephen Colbert thought the idea was funny. Check out his reaction to the new "restraining" technique in the video above.

Hey, at least the cops gave us a good laugh, right?
