These Nepo Baby Memes Blow Up So Many Fictional Characters' Spots

Nepotism babies have been feeling the heat all 2022 long, but the thermometer was turned all the way up on Dec. 19 when an in-depth article was released about the famous children of Hollywood elite. As people are wont to do with that kind of information, it inspired a new viral meme format on Twitter. The twist here, though, was that people weren’t poking fun at IRL nepo babies like Dakota Johnson or Gigi Hadid, but the best nepo baby memes blew up the spots of so many fictional characters. You may have been shocked to learn some of your favorite stars are nepotism babies (aka descendants of successful actors and musicians) when New York Magazine released its buzz-worthy cover about the most famous nepo babies in Hollywood on Dec. 19, along with and accompanying article titled “An All But Definitive Guide to the Hollywood Nepo-Verse.” Actually, it’s more of a flow chart than an article, because the story includes a painfully thorough list of dozens of nepo baby family trees, exposing the lineage of all your fave celebrities like Maude Apatow, Maya Hawke, Lily Collins, and more.

There were even OG nepo babies like Jamie Lee Curtis and Laura Dern. It’s a long list, but hey — that’s showbiz.

The list definitely had some people, er, select nepo babies, up in arms at first. But some nepo babies totally get it. Curtis, for example, told The New Yorker in 2019 how her famous mother likely helped her land her 1978 role in Halloween. “I’m sure the fact that I was Janet Leigh and Tony Curtis’s daughter, and that my mother had been in Psycho—if you’re going to choose between this one and this one, choose the one whose mother was in Psycho...” Curtis said at the time, adding that it would probably help get the movie press.

The back and forth on Twitter about what nepo babies deserve will probably never end, but it wasn’t long before Twitter users turned memes and jokes. Only, the memes weren’t about the real nepo babies in the article (they had enough to deal with, after all). Instead, users began pointing fingers at all the nepo babies the article forgot, and there were more than a few beloved fictional characters caught in the crossfire.
