Woke Up Like This: 5 Routine Ways To Become More Of A Morning Person

by Charlee Dyroff

Does the sound of an alarm going off in the morning ruin your day before it has even started?

Or maybe, you spend more energy motivating yourself to slowly inch your way out of bed than it actually physically takes you to get out of bed.

Let’s face it: Mornings aren't for everyone.

But even if you would never categorize yourself as a “morning person” — unless mornings involve waking up at noon and lazily strolling to brunch with mimosas and fluffy chocolate chip pancakes — there is still hope for you.

Here are five tiny tricks that could help smooth out the ride of the morning struggle bus:

1. Listen to your favorite upbeat song.

Starting the morning with a song that makes you want to get up and dance is probably the best way to force yourself into being a morning person. Music is very powerful, and it often connects us to some of our favorite memories, sad movies or crazy parties.

I’m sure everyone has a song that will always remind him or her of this summer. Harness the influence music has over us by turning on something upbeat in the morning to help take the edge off.

2. Power pose

The power pose will help start your day on the right note, not only because it physically works to increase good feelings of confidence, but also because you might feel a little ridiculous doing it. (And hey, being able to laugh at yourself is always a good thing.)

To do this pose,  place your arms above your head and push your chest forward proudly, as if you have just won something really important (like your favorite "Harry Potter" character at the end of a BuzzFeed quiz).

By beginning the day in a pose of power and dominance, you set yourself up to handle the rest of the day with optimism instead of dread.

3. Jumping jacks

So maybe in an ideal world, we would all get up every morning and work out before the day starts. In the real world, though, this might not always be the case.

However, getting your blood moving and heartbeat up first thing in the morning is a great way to get energy into your body. That way, the morning doesn't drag on while your body (and mind) slowly catch up.

Do even just 20 jumping jacks in the morning, dance like it’s a Friday night or stretch to start the morning off right and get your energy flowing faster.

4. Funny meme

Hands down, laughing has to make any morning at least a little better. Even though hitting technology first thing in the morning isn’t the most ideal way to encourage good vibes, we all do it anyway.

Most people look at their phones within the first few minutes of waking up. So, if we are going to be on our phones and computers first thing in the morning, we might as well use them to make ourselves laugh.

Instead of checking Facebook or Instagram right away to see what you missed out on, or how many likes you got or didn’t get, search a funny meme or joke that will make you laugh.

Maybe kill two birds with one stone, and share it with your friends to help them start their days with a smile, too.

5. Drink a glass of water.

Drinking a glass of water first thing in the morning is not only a refreshing and relaxing way to wake up, but it also has been shown to have a lot of health benefits.

Drinking a glass of water right when you wake up refuels your body after the long night, and it prepares it for the day.

It also has other benefits, like shiny glowing skin. Who doesn’t want that in the morning?

Being a morning person doesn’t mean you have to get up at the crack of dawn with a smile on your face, wanting to hug or high-five every person you talk to. It means you are in the best state to handle the day.

Starting off your morning right can completely change your day from a bad one to a great one, just by getting your body and mind ready for the challenges that lay ahead.
