Sooner Is Better Than Later: Why Wait Until The New Year For Change?

by Zach Hynoski

Many people wait until the New Year to turn over a new leaf or make changes in their lives, but why not start sooner? Why not start today? We’re only one week into a new month; it’s not too late to get started on a month-long goal. Even though it’s not as exciting as the New Year, here are some things we should do sooner rather than later:

Lying in bed? Go to sleep.

We’re all guilty of it - lying in bed until the wee hours of the morning, scrolling through newsfeeds, overthinking everything and hating ourselves for it the next day. Sleep protects our mental health, physical health and quality of life. Throw your phone in the nightstand drawer, leave your laptop on the desk, put on some relaxing music, and get a solid night’s sleep. You’ll thank yourself the next day and in the long run, as well.

Reading old messages that cause pain? Erase them.

One of the worst things to do when dealing with heartache is going back in time and re-hashing the wound. If you find yourself reading old texts and messages, or constantly checking in on that one person to see what they’re up to, stop now. Delete your texts. Clear your message history. Unfollow this person’s social media. If it’s in the past, leave it there.

Keeping it in? Let it out.

Bottling up your emotions will do you no good. Trust me. Eventually, everything inside will build up and you will crack. The sooner you talk to someone, the better you’ll feel. Pick up the phone; call a friend and vent. It’s always easier said than done, but you will feel a thousand times better afterwards. I promise.

Holding onto the wrong people? Let them go.

People come in and out of our lives all the time. Someone who may have served a great purpose in your life before might no longer have a presence in your life. Let the wrong people go. Not everyone is meant to stay in our lives forever. It’s important to discover who those people are, appreciate what they’ve done, the lessons they’ve taught us, and move on.

Unhappy with your life? Change it.

Happiness isn’t going to land on your lap. You can’t expect things to change if you’re not going to do anything about it. Find a new hobby, meet new people, and experience new things. Life’s too short to sit around and wait for happiness to come to us. Sometimes, we have to go out and find it for ourselves.
