Put Your Self First: 10 Ways To Perfect The Art Of Self-Esteem

by Kokil Sharma

The importance of having self-esteem is very underrated these days. The focus is so much more on the external objects that we are easily willing to compromise our own self-esteem to make others happy.

Feeling good and believing in yourself is extremely important in succeeding professionally and personally. Here are 10 ways you can improve your self-esteem if you are struggling:

1. Focus on what you truly want.

Doing things that truly make you happy not only increases your happiness, but also your confidence levels exponentially.

2. Refuse politely.

Do not compromise your time for things that are less important in place of the things that are the most important. Learn to refuse politely without feeling guilty.

Learn to value and respect your time and others will do the same. Say no to things that are unnecessary and take up a lot of your time, energy or both.

3. Don't feel guilty about showing someone his or her place if needed (politely of course).

Sometimes it becomes crucial to remind a certain type of person to back off. It is extremely important to stand up for yourself.

While there are some incredibly kind people in this world, there are also those who will want to take advantage of you if you let them.

Therefore, don’t feel scared to confront such people and don’t feel guilty for standing up for yourself. These sort of people need to be shown their place from time to time.

4. Don't compromise your principles for ANYTHING (job, money or a relationship).

One thing that most of us usually go wrong with is the need to compromise our standards and principles for money, work or relationships.

While you may think you have to sacrifice something to win something, remember that sooner or later, you will end up resenting the reason for which you gave up your standards.

You are unique and your requirements to live a happy life should be met. Whatever they are, you will find someone or something that is in the same frequency as you are. Just don’t compromise your happiness to fit that someone or something in.

5. Do what you are supposed to do.

Do what you are supposed to do and do it well. Don't focus on what others think or feel about it; rather, focus on how you feel.

It may be something huge, or it may be something that is very menial in the eyes of the world, but if it brings joy and peace to you, keep doing it.

6. Be patient with life.

Don’t make stupid decisions because you cannot see the next steps. Be patient and wait for things to come to you if you have already given it your best.

Sometimes, life gives you an opportunity to do nothing and be nothing so you can be ready for the next phase in your life. Use it to rejuvenate your mind, body and soul.

Sometimes, you need to empty the cup before you can fill it up again.

7. Reflect every now and then.

Reflecting on your life is a great exercise to get to know yourself better. Do it often by observing your past actions and reactions without judgment.

Don’t try to change or manipulate anything; just observe everything exactly as it is.

8. Don't over-explain yourself.

Don’t waste your energy in trying to explain yourself more than is required. People who truly care about you won’t need it and people who need that many explanations shouldn’t be in your life.

9. Pull yourself out of an environment where you feel invisible.

Life is too short to feel unwanted in a room or in someone’s life. If you feel that you are not being acknowledged for who you are and what you do, then it's time for a change.

10. Be smart with your time.

Be very precious with your time because it is limited. Spend it with people who make you laugh. Do things that expand your soul. Do not waste it on worry and regret. Be smart and be creative.

Self-esteem comes from knowing yourself, your needs and your passions inside and out. You have to be your own best friend before you can expect others to give you that space and respect in their life.
