Sam Smith won the Best Original Song Oscar during last night's ceremony for "Writing's On The Wall" and took the opportunity to discuss LGBTQ issues as, possibly, the first openly gay Oscar recipient.

He told the crowd,

I read an article by Sir Ian McKellen and he said that no openly gay man had ever won an Oscar... If this is the case, even if it isn't the case, I want to dedicate this to the LGBT community all around the world.

Today, in the harsh light of mid-afternoon, this is what we know to be true:

Sam Smith was not the first openly gay Oscar recipient.

Screenwriter Dustin Lance Black won an Oscar for Best Original Screenplay for "Milk" in 2008.

Sam Smith may or may not be texting Dustin Lance Black's fiancé, aka delicious aquatic man treat Tom Daley, on the DL.

DLB called the soulful singer out on Twitter following the ceremony.

Sidestepping the whole "fiancé" accusation, Smith fired back.

Slick way to tell someone you don't care about his work, Sam. Real slick.

This is why pre-speech research is both fun and vitally educational.
