Monica And Chandler Were Never Supposed To Be A Couple On 'Friends'

by Adam Pliskin
Warner Bros. Television

Monica and Chandler might be your favorite couple from "Friends," but they almost never got together.

Their tryst was originally meant to be a one-time deal.

However, when Monica and Chandler hooked up in "The One with Ross's Wedding, Part 2," the studio audience went nuts.

The crowd was so overjoyed, taping the show had to be postponed because of the audience's outbursts.

This made the showrunners believe they had to run with this relationship.

Marta Kauffman, one of the cocreators of "Friends," said,

We had to stop [taping] the show because people were screaming. We thought it was going to be funny and we were going to get rid of it. Suddenly the audience told us they had been waiting for that and we had to rethink how we were going to keep going and change the relationship. But that wasn't a person — it was an entire, immediate expression of joy.

Actually, Monica and Joey were initially meant to be the central couple of the show.

But the fans want what the fans want. And thus, we got the pairing of Monica and Chandler.
