Karl Lagerfeld's Pet Cat Somehow Made $3.2 Million Last Year Alone

by Emily Arata

While you were struggling to buy packages of Ramen and getting by on happy hour specials this past year, Karl Lagerfeld's cat was raking in the millions – $3.2 million, to be exact.

In a new interview with The Cut, the Chanel creative director let it slip that Choupette the Siamese cat is gainfully employed. While Lagerfeld jets around the world pushing out innovative designs, Choupette does more than just travel with him.

The Telegraph reports this year, Choupette booked two major deals: a "Shupette" collaboration with beauty brand Shu Uemura and the 2015 Opel Corsa luxury car calendar.

If recent Instagrams by fan account Choupette's Diary are to be believed, the feline even has her own special-edition cover of Lucky magazine*.

And with all of this fame and wealth coming her way, it's important to note Lagerfeld never actually purchased Choupette. While watching her for a friend, the designer reportedly just decided not to give the cat back.

He told The Cut his pet is the "Greta Garbo" of the animal kingdom, saying,

She stays always with me and she has two personal maids. They play with her, they have to take care of her beautiful white hair, the beauty treatments for her eyes, and they entertain her. She is the center of the world.

And, Lagerfeld confirms, Choupette only lends her image to the most important deals.

He added,

I don't allow her to do foodstuffs and things like this. She's too sophisticated for that.

Right now, Choupette is probably curled up in a cashmere blanket feasting on caviar. Feel free to resume eating day-old boxed mac and cheese.

*The special-edition Lucky magazine cover was an April Fools' joke from the publication.
