The statistics on sexual assault against women are staggering. But as common as it is, there is still a great taboo that comes with talking about it.

For a number of reasons (including fear of judgement, being called a liar and public humiliation), women may never report or bring up their sexual offenders — not even to their significant others.

Reddit asked the questions:

How would you react if your girlfriend told you she was sexually assaulted? What is your opinion on the subject and our attitudes towards survivors?

Men responded with a resounding, "Support her. Believe her." which is the first step in flipping the script on sexual assault.

Below are some of their answers.

This guy nails it. Believe her. Follow her lead. Don't force her to do anything besides what she wants.

I mean... NO, violence is not the answer. But YES, I respect the desire to beat the person to the ground like the POS they are.

If you don't know where to start, take a page out of these gents' books and start by doing your best to understand.

While it's certainly not a rule that a girlfriend MUST tell their boyfriend, I understand this guy would want to be in the know so he could be there to support her.

The biggest takeaway: You MUST believe a survivor.

If you have been sexually assaulted and need help, or want to learn about how you can help survivors, you can reach the National Sexual Violence Resource Center or RAINN's National Sexual Assault Hotline.
