Today, June 10, Sasha Obama turns 15. Obama, who's grown up in the public eye, has spent the last few years becoming a trendy-but-chic teenager, taking a pinch of mom Michelle's classic style and mixing it with a little Instagram to create a fashion sense that's completely her own.
You know where I was at 15? Probably still wearing tights as chokers around my neck, balancing a severe case of braces, baby face, acne and glasses. Whereas Obama nearly always looks composed, I was a hot mess. My early teen self could have learned a lot from her and, undoubtedly, whichever fashion stylist she employs to do her actual shopping.
In recent months, style blogs have fawned over the way older sister Malia is growing up, but I stand for Sasha every time. In celebration of 15 years and a first daughter who's rapidly growing up, here are some of Sasha's best style moments.
The time she met Pope Francis in this chic, color-blocked dress. Boy, bye.
The trip where she made seersucker seem modern again with an angled neckline.
When she was basically an ad for summer vacation in a tropical dress and chunky white sandals.
The time she complemented sister Malia's busy print with graphic black-and-white.
When she took a style note from color-blocking queen Solange Knowles for a family portrait.
The day she went all Kate Middleton in this green number and white bag.
When she nailed the choker trend by wearing a simple, black ribbon with an elaborate gown. Seriously, how many 15-year-olds have this much panache?
This trip where she decided to make a bold pattern work.
When she made coordinating with Mom look cool in a floral print and sweetheart neckline.
That time her eyeglasses and cream sweater were the height of retro chic.
Finally (and most importantly), the time she schooled us all in how to wear white-on-white-on-white.
