Here Are All The Deaths From ’The Walking Dead’s Midseason Finale, Both Good & Bad

by Lilli Petersen

We knew it was gonna be bad. We knew it was going to be rough. And we knew there were going to be deaths happening on the midseason finale of The Walking Dead. But at least for the first half of the episode, it looked like it was mostly the baddies who took the worst of it (which, of course, only made everyone more worried for all our faves). So, who died on The Walking Dead's midseason finale? Here's who you're mourning (or not).

From the start of the episode, fans were worried about who was going to die, and it's not the hardest thing in the world to see why. The promo trailer for this week's episode warned that it was going to be "emotional," and we all know what that means: people are gonna go. The description said,

Every story and battle from the first half of the season comes crashing together in this action-packed, emotional mid-season finale.

The first few deaths we got to see were not too high stakes — the first death in the episode was a character we didn't even know, as Enid killed Natania, the former leader from Oceanside (apparently by accident).

Next up was "Neil," apparently — though fans were super confused about who that was, as both the characters we knew as "Neil" died in previous seasons. But hey, any death is good for the drama.

Neil died as Simon took the opportunity to threaten Maggie about her control of the Hilltop, and decided to make his point with the point of a bullet.

Which apparently worked pretty well, as the next individual death was one of the Saviors at the Hilltop, called Dean — or as I like to think of him, the guy whose last words were to call Maggie "cupcake." Bad idea, my friend.

(She shot him. In the face.)

And of course, there were all the Saviors who were following Dwight when he led them straight into Daryl and co.'s line of fire. Dead.

But the big one, of course?

Carl. Oh, Carl.

In the closing minutes of the episode, as Rick's group regathered and they found their old and new allies, one of the most emotional moments was when Rick and Michonne finally found Carl, after Negan and his allies raided and destroyed Alexandria. They lost everything, but they were still together.

Until the moment that Carl lifted his shirt and showed the bite mark on his side.

Oh, Carl.

Of course, everyone on social media got emotional AF, and I can't blame them. You live through a zombie apocalypse as a child, you grow up managing to maintain hope, to build a life and keep faith that there are good things, and then... this?

Now, to be fair, we don't know for sure that Carl is dead. He certainly wasn't dead at the end of the episode, and if there's one hard and fast truth about cliffhanger-y endings it's that no one is dead until you see the body (and even then it's debatable).

But if this is Carl's final moments on the show, it would be the most heartbreaking death that fans have had to deal with all season, and definitely the highest profile / biggest character death of the season. I'll be honest, I thought that Carl was safe, even though so many of the tweets about the midseason finale were convinced that he was a goner (that's what happens when someone gets too hyped up at the beginning of an episode. Everyone's convinced they're gonna die).

And unfortunately, it looks like this time fan paranoia may have been right. Let's all hope that the show somehow upends everything that it's held as canon up until now and Carl is miraculously immune. Or something.
