Here's How To Pronounce Saoirse Ronan's Name, In Case You Were Wondering
With award show season quickly approaching, and the Golden Globes literally around the corner on Jan. 7, it's time to start brushing up on new movies and must-watch celebs. Although the official list of Golden Globe nominees will not be released until Dec. 11, there are already tons of reliable predictions circulating. One recent movie that has been popping up in a lot of categories is Lady Bird. The movie stars Saoirse Ronan alongside Laurie Metcalf and Lucas Hedges. If you want to start discussing the movie with your friends but are wondering, "How do you pronounce Saoirse Ronan's name?" Don't worry, I have you covered.
Actually, we can all thank Ellen DeGeneres for finally clearing up the real pronunciation of the actress' name. Obviously, Saoirse is a very unique name. The Irish beauty explained that "Saoirse" translates to "freedom" in English — which makes it instantly more cool and unique. While her name is a humdinger to pronounce, Dennis Quaid is the one who really made it the center of conversation. Quaid announced the actress' name as "Shee-shah" during the 2015 Golden Globe nomination ceremony.
Just so we are all clear, the correction pronounciation of "Saoirse" is "Ser-sha" — it rhymes with "inertia." After the name flub, Ellen DeGeneres actually made Ronan a handy sign to wear at award shows so there would be no more confusion.

I could seriously listen to Ronan talk all day long — I'm obsessed with her Irish accent. Although I knew she was Irish, I was still super surprised to hear her speak after her absolutely perfect American accent in Lady Bird. The movie follows the life of an average teenage girl living in Sacramento, California. The slice-of-life movie profiles her Catholic schooling, fights with her mother, and so much more.
The plot description from Rotten Tomatoes reads,
I went to see the movie, and both my friend and I said at the same time, "That kind of reminded me of my life," as we were walking out of the theater. The movie is super relatable, funny at times, and an overall good watch.
In her debut film, director Greta Gerwig has made a splash with Lady Bird. The movie is close to her heart because it is based off her own experience growing up in Sacramento. The movie has been getting amazing reviews, and it even bumped Toy Story 2 off Rotten Tomatoes' list for highest-rated movie. After Lady Bird received 164 positive reviews, the Los Angeles Times explained,
Basically, if you haven't seen Lady Bird, it's amazing. It's being predicted that Lady Bird will be nominated in a few Golden Globes categories. Although the official list is not out yet, it's being predicted by Bustle that Saoirse Ronan will be nominated for Best Actress in a Motion Picture (Musical or Comedy), Laurie Metcalf will be nominated for Best Supporting Actress, Greta Gerwig will be nominated for Best Director, and Lady Bird will be nominated for Best Picture (Comedy or Musical). Honestly, that is high praise and would be very well-deserved.
At the very least, you should go see it so you can join in during fun award show banter. You can even teach your friends how to pronounce Saoirse Ronan's name and look like such an elite movie buff. What fun!
