Woman Drowns Because Her Father Didn't Want Lifeguards Touching Her

by Taylor Ortega

Some days the struggle to understand beliefs that differ from our own can be overwhelming, and today is definitely one of those days.

A 20-year-old woman who drowned off the coast of Dubai allegedly stood a chance of surviving, but her father violently prevented lifeguards from intervening in an attempt to protect her purity.

Lieutenant Colonel Ahmed Burqibah, deputy director of Dubai Police's Search and Rescue Department, claims the incident is one that will stick with him for years to come.

Burqibah said when the woman began to struggle she shouted for aid, and lifeguards attempted to save her.

He said,

There was one obstacle which prevented them from reaching the girl... the belief of this Asian man who considered that if these men touched his daughter, this would dishonor her… He told them that he prefers his daughter being dead than being touched by a strange man.

Burqibah insisted the father's actions were not without consequence and has since been "prosecuted and sued" for his behavior.
