To My Future Daughter: Everything I Wish For You To Know About The World

Dear Future Daughter,

I do not know you, yet, but I know this much: I already love you more than anyone to ever enter my life. I am 22 right now, and though I don’t know when we will first meet, I do know it will be the greatest day of my life.

I want you to know I will spend the rest of my life protecting you, teaching you, caring for you, worrying about you and doing all those annoying things my mom does for me. Before I become a mom, though, there are some things I want you to know.

First off, you will do many things that make my head spin and will lead me to yell at you. Despite my yelling, however, never question my love for you. When you make a mistake, know I will always be there to pick up the pieces of whatever mess you create, whether you are 5 or 55.

You will accomplish so many things that will make me proud.

Next, more than anything, I want you to follow your dreams; whatever they are and no matter how crazy I think they may be, don’t allow me to ever tell you that you can’t do something — because you can. Any doubts I may have come from fear for myself and for you, but I do believe you are capable of anything.

I want you to know that you are the most beautiful girl in the world, and you should not let anyone tell you any differently. When it comes to girlfriends, know that they will bear drama. If I can instill anything in you, it is to be kind to everyone you meet, despite how different someone is.

Befriend everyone and don’t ever succumb to peer pressure or mistreating people.

People remember the words you say, so make sure you speak kind words. When it comes to friendships, you will lose a few, and you will get hurt by some people you never anticipated would hurt you. Just know that you will, in time, find real, loyal friends that will last forever.

When it comes to friends and your siblings, despite the fact that they may sometimes drive you crazy, remember that family always comes first. Your siblings will be your best friends; they will last forever. You may fight a lot now, but it won’t last.

Work hard in life and in school, and strive to be the best you can be; do not settle for being average because you are capable of so much more. Find your passion and follow it.

When it comes to guys, please know that your first heartbreak will be awful, and I won't be able to mend that wound. I’ll tell you it happened to me, but it won’t change the emptiness you feel or close the huge hole in your heart.

Just know that you’ll meet a million guys in your life, and one day, you will meet someone truly great. We might butt heads in your teenage years from time to time, but I am forever on your side.

I know you will want to grow up fast, but I promise you, you will grow up in time. One day, you’ll be in your own apartment, and you won't have to answer to anyone. You won’t admit it, but you will miss us.

Do not rush growing up; enjoy being a kid because, at 22, I wish I were young again.

You think you will have all the answers, but the questions will just become more complicated. You will understand when you grow up a little. For now, just know that I love you with all my heart. You are the best thing that has ever happened to me.

Love Always,

Mom
