17 Things You Have To Let Go Of When You Want To Get Your Sh*t Together

by Paul Hudson

With more and more individuals feeling capable of great things, we have created what many are now calling a quarter-life crisis.

It used to be that when people would reach the age of 50, they would stop to reexamine their lives, remind themselves of all the things that they wanted to accomplish, and are faced with the realization of how little they actually managed to pull off.

Our generation has much higher aspirations than any other generation before us. More people believe in themselves and because of this fact, more people expect more from themselves – and they expect it much sooner. Generation-Y doesn’t want to retire at 60. We want to retire at 30.

It’s most definitely possible, but you’re going to have to buckle down and get to work.

Most importantly, you’re going to have to say goodbye to a bunch of things:

1. Binge drinking.

It may be fun, but once you stop, your liver will thank you. The real problem isn’t even the drinking itself, but rather the recovery period that follows.

2. Drugs.

Depending on what drugs you’re used to taking, you’ll have different issues getting your life together. Some drugs dull your senses. Others will make you hate your life the following morning.

3. One-night stands.

Not to say that you can’t have any, but you’ll likely have to cut them down a bit. You’ll be much happier building a solid roster of booty calls.

4. The fear of the unknown.

Without mystery, life would feel like a rerun. Don’t run from it; embrace it.

5. TV binge-watching.

Nobody got time for that. And if you think you do, then you’re either not doing enough with your life or giving up entirely on sleep. Either way, it’s got to go.

6. Some of your friends.

Many of us have one or two friends who are holding us back. If you believe that that’s the case, then you really only have one option: Man up and move on to better things.

7. EDM Festivals.

If it’s not in Ibiza, then there isn’t a point of going in the first place. If underage, cracked out girls are your thing, then I suggest you seek therapy instead. Maybe lay off the dubstep for a while.

8. Your comfort zone.

A large part of life is experiencing or tasting what the world has to offer. If you’re not trying something new at least once a month, then you aren’t living right.

9. All those men and/or women that you keep around because they’re convenient.

Don’t sleep with someone for convenience – it’s boring and unsatisfactory. Live a little and meet someone new.

10. The notion that you are the most intelligent person in the world.

You’re not – not by a long shot.

11. That ridiculous haircut.

People judge you by you by the way you look and there’s nothing you can do to change that fact. There’s no point of fighting the system because the system changes for no man. You may as well play their game and take care of business.

12. Your highschool wardrobe.

Always dress the part – fake it until you make it. If you dress like a teenager, then people will look at you as if you have the intellect of a teenager.

13. Your ex.

It’s either over or it’s not. Decide which of the two it is, and accept that as the reality. Move on with your life!

14. That job you hate oh so very much.

Sure, it pays the rent… but if it doesn’t feed the soul, then you’re really only starving yourself. Money can always be made. Worry about making it with a smile on your face.

15. Most of your beliefs.

You have to always remain open to new ideas and new ways of looking at old things. We too often come into things with preconceived notions of what should or shouldn’t be, never really taking the time to examine what's in front of us.

16. That tiny box you call an apartment.

You may not realize the effect that having an awful apartment has on you, but once you upgrade to something with more breathing room, you will.

17. Going out every weekend.

There may be no harm in going out for drinks every weekend – or every day even. But going out-out until 6 in the morning, you just can’t do – not every week. Not if you want to get your sh*t together.
