Taylor Swift Seems To Be Teasing Her Next Single In The "Opalite" Video

The mastermind has done it again.

It just wouldn’t be a Taylor Swift music video without a ton of meaningful little details and cameos. And “Opalite” may be the singer’s most star-studded music video ever. Not only is the nostalgic rom-com-inspired clip filled with celebrities, it also includes a bunch of sly references... including a big hint at what Swift’s third single from The Life of a Showgirl will be.

The biggest and most unmistakeable Easter egg in the video is Swift’s celebrity co-stars. “Opalite” features Domhnall Gleeson as Swift’s love interest, and scene-stealing cameos from Lewis Capaldi, Jodie Turner-Smith, Greta Lee, Cillian Murphy, and Graham Norton. Swift has confirmed on Instagram that she invited everyone who appeared on The Graham Norton Show with her back in October to appear in the video, revealing that the concept struck her during that group interview.

There’s one more important co-star that’s a little less obvious. Swift’s brother Austin briefly appears in the background. The cameo is a nod to his reference in the “Opalite” lyrics, when Swift sings: “My brother used to call it / Eating out of the trash.”

Other than that, most of the notable Easter eggs are references to nostalgic movies, like She’s All That and Back to the Future. However, there’s one small detail that could be signaling big things for Swifties.

During one shot of the video, a George Michael poster is prominently featured. Fans believe that this is Swift’s way of hinting at her song “Father Figure” becoming her next single, since it samples Michael’s song of the same name.

The choice would make sense. “Father Figure” became an instant fan favorite after Swift released The Life of a Showgirl, thanks largely to its unapologetic lyrics. The song is believed to be about Swift reclaiming her masters from Scott Borchetta and Scooter Braun (although there’s also a theory it could be about Olivia Rodrigo as well).

Swift has spoken about the song’s backstory previously, revealing that it was inspired by the Succession character Logan Roy.
