Nicki Minaj is letting her fans speak for her these days.
When the 33-year-old appeared on "The Ellen DeGeneres Show" on Thursday, the host made a point to ask about her relationship -- and supposed engagement -- to fellow rapper Meek Mill.
Minaj explained she felt the best approach to sharing her relationship status with the world was simply not to share it at all.
She reportedly told DeGeneres,
We're still figuring each other out. And in fact, I don't even want to say that I'm in a relationship anymore, because I think when people hear that, they go to like the mean place... I used to be secretive... I used to say, 'I'm not in a relationship,' even though I was in a 12-year relationship... Now I feel like just going back to that and saying, 'You know what? I'm single.'
To further prove her point, Minaj recalled her decision to keep photos of her Valentine's Day gifts off Instagram earlier this year, which started the usual whirlwind of breakup rumors.
We were getting anonymous messages saying, 'Yeah, she wasn't with him and she was crying all day.' ... Meanwhile, we were really in bed all day on Valentine's Day. Like, seriously! We were in bed all day, and then I got up and opened these three amazing gifts, and then I went back to bed.
No longer concerned with the aspersions cast by outsiders, Minaj insisted she's currently attempting to "forget about trying to get everyone's approval."
It's better just to keep those things sacred. So, now, I don't really care to say 'I'm in a relationship' or 'I'm engaged' or whatever. There's a boy that likes me. That's all.
Viewers and members of the media heard the word "single" and freaked.
Rather than dive back into the wormhole of negativity she vowed to avoid, Nicki began posting to Instagram a bunch of fans' defensive tweets.
Until Nicki decides to share tidbits of her personal life with the public, it's time to keep the focus on her music, her inimitable style and her super supportive fanbase.
