The trailer for "Snowden" just dropped, and describing it as "intense" would be a tremendous understatement.

Directed by Oliver Stone and starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt, the film offers a dramatic portrayal of the events surrounding one of the most controversial events of the 21st century so far -- the NSA leaks orchestrated by Edward Snowden.

Snowden, a former NSA contractor, currently has asylum in Russia and remains an extremely divisive figure.

To some, Edward Snowden is a traitor, but to others, he's a patriot who provided his fellow citizens with vital information about government surveillance.

Regardless of how you feel about him, it's undeniable Snowden helped generate a vital conversation regarding the convoluted balance between liberty and security.

Snowden presented a complicated but imperative question to a world dominated by digital technology: How much of our privacy must be sacrificed for the sake of national security?

It's not entirely clear whether this film takes a neutral position on Snowden's character and actions, but we can't wait to see it.

Above, watch the trailer for "Snowden," which hits theaters on September 16.
