Kerry Washington Responds To People Calling On Olivia Pope After The Election

No, Olivia Pope can't save you from the hellscape that American politics has become overnight.'

That's because, as Kerry Washington reminded us on the day after America chose Donald Trump to be the next president of the United States, Olivia Pope is not real.

On Tuesday night and Wednesday morning, as the American people realized that yes, we really were about to put Trump in charge of the free world, some people began tweeting looking for help from Olivia Pope, the fictional political crisis manager from the ABC show "Scandal."

At around midnight on decision night, 24-year-old singer and activist Demi Lovato asked,

Where is #OliviaPope when you need her?

Meanwhile, 33-year-old actress Dana DeLorenzo, known for her role as Kelly Maxwell in the Starz series "Ash vs Evil Dead" went to bed on Tuesday dreaming of the fictional character.

She tweeted,

Goodnight, America. Will be dreaming of #OliviaPope storming in and saying these magical words. #considerithandled #gladiator #scandal

However, when 39-year-old "Scandal" star Kerry Washington noticed that her character's name was trending on Twitter, she had some stern, but kind words of reality for those hoping for an Olivia Pope bailout.

On Wednesday morning the actress tweeted,

OLIVIA POPE is trending. But Olivia Pope is not real. Whats real is the need for love today. LOVE yourself. Take CARE of you & your loved 1s.

Kerry reminded "Scandal" fans that Olivia Pope is fictional, but our love for ourselves and support for each other is real.

So, to those of us mourning this election: Go ahead, binge-watch all the seasons of "Scandal," or whatever your favorite series is, on Netflix. Maybe even invite a friend, or loved one over to sit on the couch and binge-watch right along with you.

I think we could all use the escape this week.

But don't rely on fictional characters to fix the mess we made. Only real people can fix this one.
