Valentine’s Day Statistics

by Ally Batista

Today is Valentine’s Day, and whether you’re bitter towards the holiday or not, you can’t deny that this Hallmark created holiday sure is lucrative for all of those businesses involved.

For those of you who ever wondered how much Americans spend on Valentine’s Day, here’s a little numerical breakdown for you.

Americans will spend $18.6 billion on Valentine’s Day in 2013. 145 million paper Valentines will be sent, with the average person spending around $130.97 on the holiday.

20-30% more condoms are purchased on Valentine’s Day. Romance must go along with sex on this day, seeing as 36 million heart-shaped boxes will be sold today.

$1.6 billion will be spent towards candy just for this day (obesity in America) and $4.4 billion will be spent on Jewelry.

It’s not just couples who receive Valentine’s Day love today, two in five Americans will buy their pets Valentine’s Day gifts this year.

It’s statistics such as these that have me asking, “What recession?”
