Online Resale Communities

by Ally Batista

The fashion obsessed are sometimes conflicted. Should we buy something that’s super trendy, that’s only going to be worn once or twice, and then give it away? This could be the deciding factor in whether or not many women actually pull the trigger and buy trendy pieces.

Other fashionistas like to resell their trendy pieces, make a little money back, and use that money toward new clothing. Maybe, the fashion obsessed don’t need to sell anything and simply want to purchase a piece they’ve seen online somewhere, but can’t find it anywhere else. How do girls accomplish this? By utilizing these five online resale communities:

Shop Hers: a luxury e-commerce marketplace where similarities in your personal measurements and style are the criteria used to match up similar profiles, known as ‘Style Soul Mates.’ The company takes an 18 percent fee on regular transactions and 35 percent on VIP Closet transactions.

EDrop-Off: one of the world’s largest online marketplaces, selling more than 2,500 products per week. The site has an actual location in Chicago where local customers can go in and try something on, prior to bidding on it. The site hosts free nationwide pickup for the sellers, and offer closet clean-out consulting services.

Vaunte: an online community that features editorial images and profile interviews on their sellers. Founders by the VPs of Gilt Groupe, Vaunte chooses its own sellers among a group of fashion insiders, social media influencers, socialites and tastemakers.

Material Wrld: an NYC-based online community that shows off the closets of fashion editors and bloggers that gives shoppers the ability to purchase a piece they spotted on their favorite street-style blog.

Threadflip: this is a simpler online resale community that allows you to snap and upload your own photos of your closet into your own personal online boutique. Sellers can then engage with their community and shoppers to make sure their items get purchased. The company takes a 15 percent commission on products you upload and sell on your own. Don’t want to go through the trouble of selling your own products? Their white-glove service will do it all for you, for a 40 to 50 percent portion of the sale.

Would you use any of these sites?
