Emma Watson Becomes UN Ambassador To Urge Men To Talk About Gender Equality

by Katie Gonzalez

The United Nations, known for courting celebrities and influencers like Angelina Jolie in an attempt to bring greater awareness to the world's gravest issues, has appointed another ambassador.

Emma Watson, who once fought magical evil onscreen as Hermoine Granger, will now help fight against discrimination and mistreatment of women around the world, as a UN Women Goodwill Ambassador.

Going to be working for the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and The Empowerment of Women (!!!) http://t.co/9ABpKSrNCb — Emma Watson (@EmWatson) July 7, 2014

Watson will reportedly work with the HeForShe Campaign, which encourages men to speak up and speak out against gender inequality.

Watson said she was excited to become a bigger advocate for women and girls across the globe in a statement.

Women's rights are something so inextricably linked with who I am, so deeply personal and rooted in my life that I can’t imagine an opportunity more exciting. I still have so much to learn, but as I progress I hope to bring more of my individual knowledge, experience and awareness to this role.

Hopefully Watson will act as more than just a face of the campaign, and will actively engage with men and help determine ways to make more men realize that women's advancement is actually a benefit to them, too.

So often in our conversations about achieving gender equality, we focus on what women must do, but men are clearly an important part of the equation if we want to secure the equal and fair treatment of women.
