It's the female body in rare form — completely exposed, but proudly bearing scars.

Photographer Isis Charise has shot a number of breast cancer survivors in the nude so that the women can show their beauty with their mastectomy scars.

"It is my hope that these images create a doorway that leads to further acceptance of the post mastectomy body. Not only for women who live with the challenge of breast cancer, but also for their partners, families and caregivers."

In the photo series, entitled Grace, the women are posed romantically in goddess-inspired sets, emulating the likes of Venus and Aphrodite.

Charise said the decision to pose her models as Greek goddesses and other mythical figures highlights the women's natural beauty.

"I considered that if I photographed my subjects within this classical context in mind, that it would create a window for both the subject and the viewer to access a place of acceptance and beauty."

Although the photos might be NSFW, they're still a poignant reminder of the beauty that exists in a body even after it's been damaged by illness.
