Gabby Douglas Finally Explains Why She Spent The VMAs In The Hospital

Gabby Douglas could not join the rest of the Final Five at Sunday's MTV Video Music Awards.

Now, we know why.

The three-time Olympic gold medalist posted a photo on Instagram with an explanation that read,

Hey guys! Just wanted to let you know that I'm doing ok! I had a complication from a prior injury that caused a cyst to grow on a bone in my mouth. Got it removed and feeling much better now!

Douglas' absence was made that much more noticeable by her teammates' prevalence in many of the photos from Sunday's award show in New York.

Fellow gold medalists Simone Biles, Aly Raisman, Madison Kocian and Laurie Hernandez enjoyed a night where they crossed the red carpet and presented an award on stage at Madison Square Garden.

Douglas, on the other hand, was resting in her bed.

That night, a source for the New York Post said the former Olympic All-Around champion was suffering from "deep swelling."

The Post's report on Sunday read,

Gabby is back in the hospital tonight being treated for a seriously infected past mouth injury. She continues to have deep swelling and adverse reactions to medications.

But everything seems OK now, and she won't be out of the spotlight much longer.

The 20-year-old is scheduled to appear on "The Late Late Show with James Corden" on Thursday night.
