Here's Everything We Know About Bughead On 'Riverdale' Season 2

After a short summer hiatus, Riverdale is on its way back for Season 2 and, based on what we saw from the crew during last season's dramatic finale, we're in for one hell of a shocking premiere. Of course, Season 2 will pick up where Season 1 left off, but that doesn't mean we're not in for some new surprises, as well. In fact, the announcement of one new character has tons of Riverdale fans wondering if Betty and Jughead break up in Season 2.

That's right. Back in July, it was announced a new addition to the Riverdale cast, Toni Topaz, would be played by The Shannara Chronicles' Vanessa Morgan. Toni is bisexual and a member of the Southside Serpents, which puts her in awfully close proximity to one mister Jughead Jones. Since her addition was announced, it's been suggested she might cause some trouble in paradise for everyone's fave couple, Bughead. Obviously we all keep coming back to Riverdale because we crave the drama, but this might just be too much for me to handle. Jughead and Betty breaking up? Thanks, but no.

As far as perfect TV couples go, these two pretty much take the cake, and, let's be honest, Riverdale without Bughead would be like Cheryl Blossom without red lipstick.

While it's impossible to know right now whether or not Bughead's relationship will survive this season, it's easy to speculate on their fate given the Season 2 details we've gotten so far from Riverdale insiders. Indeed, showrunner Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa spoke with Entertainment Tonight in August about Bughead, telling the outlet,

Bughead is pretty strong, and pretty undeniable, and pretty epic, but you know even the most epic of romances has trouble — and trouble often comes as a third party. So yes, it is conceivable that Toni will potentially test the limits of Bughead.

Meanwhile, Vanessa Morgan herself confirmed to Bustle in September that her character gets pretty cozy with Jughead. The actress said,

I stir it up a bit for Bughead, I'm part of Southside. I'm one of Jughead's first friends... I bring a bit of trouble. I'm the girl in the gang; my character is badass, and Jughead is the son of the King Serpent... why wouldn't I [welcome] him?

Taken together, it's easy to see how Toni might be the cause of a major riff in Jughead and Betty's relationship this season.

Last we saw of Jughead, he was looking pretty comfortable in a Southside Serpents jacket, and, according to Vanessa, Toni is ready to welcome him to the shady gang. Naturally, those who ship Bughead are NOT thrilled with Toni's addition to the cast, and the potential she has to shake things up for Jug and Betty already has fans outraged. The actress told Glamour in August that she's received death threats from fans of the show; she said,

I've already had some death threats. But the thing is, it's half death threats because they don't want that [actually] happening, and there's half that's just all love. Who knows if [my character coming between Bughead] is even going to happen. People are just jumping to conclusions.

And all before her character has even made her on-screen debut. SMH. As Morgan says, though, fans are "jumping to conclusions." As we've learned with Riverdale, there are surprises around every corner, so, no matter what's been said, there is no guarantee Jughead and Betty will break up this season, and — even if they do — there's no guarantee it'll be because of Toni.

All we can do now is re-binge-watch Season 1 and prepare for all the Season 2 drama to come. Fingers crossed Bughead makes it out alive.
