John Oliver Breaks Down Exactly How F*cked Up Standardized Testing Is (Video)

by Gillian Fuller

On a recent episode of HBO's “Last Week Tonight with John Oliver,” host John Oliver hilariously took down academia in an 18-minute-long comedic rampage against standardized testing.

When I was in high school, we took maybe two standardized evaluations every year.

However, new statistics indicate during the course of his or her education, a student will take approximately 113 of these tests by graduation -- a figure Oliver jokes “[approaches] the amount [of tests] you'd ask your doctor for the morning after waking up from a one-night stand with Colin Farrell.”

Bottom line: That's a lot of unnecessary tests.

In the video up top, Oliver explains everything that's wrong with standardized testing: how testing essentially measures nothing, all the stress tests put on students and even how booklets now come with instructions detailing what to do if a student vomits on the test (apparently, a commonplace occurrence).

Oliver's takedown is hilarious and totally accurate. It's a bit long, but it's worth a watch just for the laughs.
