Groom Tries To Drown Himself After Seeing 'Ugly' Arranged Wife The First Time

by Gillian Fuller

To a commitment-phobe, marriage can seem like a death sentence.

For one man, it almost was.

After meeting his future bride for the first time, who he'd been set up with through an arranged marriage, 33-year-old Kang Hu reportedly jumped into a nearby river to drown himself.

The groom, from Shiyan in China's Hubei province, apologized to 30-year-old Na Sung, who he said was “too ugly” and would be “bad for his image” just hours before the alleged suicide attempt.

Wedding guests called the police, who were able to rescue Hu.

According to witness Qan Tsui, Hu was “fully clothed and floating face down in the water” when rescue crews arrived.

Hu said told Mirror,

One [police officer] jumped in and dragged him ashore with the help of foremen who put a rope around his chest to pull him out, before pumping his chest. They saved his life.

He was brought to the hospital, where he remains in stable condition.

Hu admitted,

I feel bad about what happened, but when I saw her, she wasn't what I expected, and I realized she would be bad for my image. My parents had arranged this and I couldn't see any way out apart from suicide.

'Til death do us part, indeed.
