For Rico the German Shepherd, three years of being separated from his family felt like no time at all.

The dog, part of a famously loyal breed, seemingly recognized his long-lost owners with no hesitation.

Fox 5 reports Andrea Arce and her two children, aged 6 and 8, lost ownership of the dog during a "messy" split.

Two weeks ago, however, the San Diego family received an unbelievable call from a shelter in Virginia. Rico had somehow been found.

After one long plane ride, 6-year-old Rico finally rejoined his family.
