America has never had a female head of state, and Ryan Gosling thinks it's time for that to change.

In a recent interview with ES magazine the actor stated,

I think women are better than men. They are stronger, more evolved. You can tell especially when you have daughters and you see their early stages, they are just leaps and bounds beyond boys immediately. I think [America] needs a woman's touch. I've always liked women more. I was brought up by my mother and older sister. I found my way into dance class. My home life now is mostly women. They are better than us. They make me better.

He makes a good point, and it speaks to a broader problem in terms of the nature of the US political system.

Simply put, the US has never had enough female leadership.

At present, even Afghanistan has a higher percentage of females in its legislature than the US.

There is a number of reasons we should push for more female politicians. Studies show, for example, female legislatures are more likely than men to champion bills regarding civil rights and liberties, education, health, labor and beyond.

There have been over 70 female presidents and prime ministers since 1960 when Sri Lanka elected Sirimavo Bandaranaike as the world's first female prime minister. The US is definitely way behind the times.

If America truly desires to establish a free, fair and progressive society, it needs more female political representation.
