Doctor Says 'Go Get Your Birth Control Now' Because In 3 Months It'll Be Gone
A doctor who worked on Obamacare has a simple message for women: “Go get your birth control now.”
Dr. Kavita Patel's warning comes after Donald Trump's American Health Care Act took a step closer to replacing the Affordable Care Act implemented by Barack Obama.
There have been several worrying omens that the Trump administration's health care plan could make it harder for women to access birth control — it could also become more expensive.
Dr. Patel, a primary care doctor at Johns Hopkins and senior fellow at the Brookings Institution, worked on the Affordable Care Act.
She told Jezebel there would be a major impact on access to birth control if Trump's bill is pushed through.
She said,
Planned Parenthood will go away, Medicaid paying for contraception will probably go away. Here's the truth as a woman — go get your birth control now because, honestly, nobody knows if all of this passes if you'll be able to get this in three months.
Under the existing Affordable Care Act, women can obtain birth control via the “birth control benefit” for free.
It has helped millions of women to afford safe and reliable birth control, and has likely contributed to America reaching its lowest abortion rate in decades.
However, this clear benefit to the nation could be removed due to Trump's disdain for Obamacare.
On March 16, the US House Budget Committee voted to move the American Health Care Act to a final committee.
It will then be up for a vote in the House of Representatives — but there are some worrying details in the bill as it currently looks.
Dr. Patel added,
We need to demand better out of our system and we need to demand better from our government. We shouldn't release the pressure on our elected officials until they answer: Why does it have to be this way? It should be better.
Elite Daily has approached Planned Parenthood for comment, and will update this article if they respond.
